Crocodiles are very interesting animals which are found all over the world both in salt water and in  fresh water.  For those who have managed to watch the movie Crocodile dandy, that's just a glimps of what a crocodile is like. They have been potrayed in many stories and movies as both heros and vilains but these beautiful dangerous animasl are great animals to watch and not tohave them as pets.

As far s crocodile facts are concerned, some of the earliest crocodiles lived with the dinosaurs. The earliest known crocodile ancestor was called a protosuchian. The protosuchian lived about 200 million years ago. This crocodile was about three feet long. This ancient crocodile had sharp teeth and covered with bony spines. After the protosuchian came the stenosaurus, which lived about 180 million years ago.  As time went by another crocodile species came another ancestor of the crocodile, the deinosuchus, was the first United States ancestor of the crocodile. The deinosuchus was up to fifty feet in length and had a skull about six feet long. Its name meant "terrible crocodile" in Greek, and this crocodile did live up to its name.

Characteristics of Crocodiles

What do we know about crocs and crocodiles? As a matter of fact, crocodiles as people might say  are now a bit different, but with the deprive of their natural habitat and breeding grounds, you find that crocodiles have not changed much. Like any other reptile, crocodiles have backbones and lungs. All crocodiles when they are in the water, must come to the surface once in a while to to breathe. Unlike the hippopotamus or other marine animals, the crocodile can stay underwater for three to five minutes. Crocodiles have four-chambered hearts. Ceocodiles are are cold-blooded and have no lips. The crocodile's  mouths can't close tight. The color of their skin is dark gray or green. Crocodiles have a valve that closes their air pipe so that water can't enter the lungs while they are underwater. Many crocodiles are usually thirteen to eighteen feet long but some of the giant crocodiles or the Gustavo crocodile are some of the largest Nile crocodiles ever known.

For protection and amour, the crocodiles have bony plates on their backs which can be as lethal with a slight swing of their tail which can send you screaming for your life. While the crocodile bodies are cigar-shaped  you find that this part of the body is composed of very tough hide or crocodile skin which is used to make leather goods and one of the reasons as to why crocodiles are hunted to almost near extinction in may parts of the world.

A crocodile in the wild can live fifty years. The weight of a crocodile is about on average, 1350 pounds. These dangerous crocodiles have powerful legs and huge tails.  The crocodile\s feet are somewhat webbed and have long nails to help them grab their prey and also in digging as well. Crocodiles use their tails to capture food.  Almost all crocodiles have thirty to forty teeth, which interlock when its mouth when it is closed. When any animal or insects get i the mouth  and gets caught up in the middle of the crocodiles, teeth, there is no way ought you can be able to move due to the sheer strength of the crocodiles jaws. In fact a crocodile has one of the strongest jays in the world. and be warned, these beautiful dangerous crocodiles have a good sense of hearing and smell as well.

Differences Between Crocodiles and Alligators
Are crocodiles and alligators different? This is one of the most frequently asked questions about crocodiles and alligators.
Crocodiles and alligators are different. Alligators have more teeth than crocodiles. The main difference between alligators and crocodiles is that crocodiles have pointed snouts, while alligators have flat snouts. Another difference about crocodiles and alligators is that crocodiles are more agile than alligators whether they are in the wilderness or in captivity as well.

Eating Habits

A crocodile's jaws can crush the bones of a small animal when the jaws are being closed. They eat fish, turtles, and water birds, but usually anything they can catch - including people! A crocodile always swallows his food whole.

Habitats

Crocodiles live in the Everglades. They prefer large shallow bodies of freshwater or saltwater. Also, they live in the warmest, most tropical region on earth. In the extreme heat or cold, they go into hibernation and estivation. When doing this, they bury themselves in mud and live off stored fat.

Eggs and Babies

Female crocodiles make great mothers. The females are the ones that make the nests out of sand, mud, and weeds. Nests are built on the water's edge and are really just shallow holes. These nests are only a few inches high. There are about twenty to ninety eggs in a nest, but most never hatch due to predators who eat the eggs. A crocodile egg is about the size of a goose egg. When the mother crocodile hears the grunts of her babies, she helps her children push out of the nest. The babies themselves get out of the eggs using their egg tooth. When born, a baby crocodile is about eight inches long. They are born a light greenish, gray color with black crossband. Baby crocodiles eat water insects and shellfish. In some parts of the world, crocodile eggs are used for food.

Useful avoidance techniques: Straight from the society of stating the obvious: do not swim in areas where there are crocodiles. It may be hot, and you may want a swim, but the croc will see you coming and the rest doesn’t bear thinking about.
